Storm Sewer & Stormwater Management

The Rhode Island Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (RIPDES) Phase II Stormwater regulations require the Town of East Greenwich, as an operator of a municipal separate storm sewer system, to implement programs and practices to minimize pollution from Stormwater runoff.

Developing a Plan

The regulations require operators of municipal separate storm sewer systems within urbanized or densely populated areas to develop a Stormwater Management Plan.

Goal

The goal of the Town's Stormwater Management Plan is to reduce the adverse impacts to water quality, aquatic habitat, and human health by instituting controls on the unregulated sources of Stormwater discharges.

The Town's Stormwater Management Plan addresses the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) 6 minimum control measures that are designed to improve water quality by reducing the pollutants that enter urban drainage systems during storm events.

6 Minimum Control Measures

  1. Public Evacuation and Outreach
  2. Public Involvement/Participation
  3. Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination
  4. Construction Site Runoff Controls
  5. Post-Construction Site Runoff Controls
  6. Pollution Prevention/Good Housekeeping
